Description
In the Roman Republic, a decurio, centurio, and optio were military ranks with distinct roles and responsibilities within the Roman army.
A decurio was an officer in command of a unit of cavalry called a turma, which typically consisted of about 30 men. The decurio was responsible for leading these cavalrymen in battle and maintaining discipline within the unit.
A centurio, or centurion, was a professional officer in the Roman legions, commanding a century, which was a unit of around 80 legionaries. The centurion was a key figure in the Roman military hierarchy, responsible for training the soldiers, enforcing discipline, and leading them in combat. Centurions held significant authority and were often experienced veterans.
An optio was the deputy or second-in-command to the centurion. Chosen by the centurion, the optio assisted in managing the century, took over command in the centurion’s absence, and performed administrative duties. The optio was a crucial support role, helping to ensure the smooth operation of the century.
