Description
Sagittarii were archers in the Roman Republic, often serving as auxiliary troops rather than part of the legions’ heavy infantry. They were recruited from various regions within the Roman Empire, including the provinces of the East, where archery was a traditional skill.
These troops were valued for their ability to provide ranged support in battle, complementing the legionaries’ close combat capabilities. They used a variety of bows, with some units equipped with the powerful composite bow, which had a greater range and penetrating power compared to the simpler self bows. Sagittarii could fight on foot or as mounted archers, increasing their flexibility on the battlefield.
Their role included harassing enemy formations, disrupting charges, and targeting key enemy personnel. Over time, as the Roman military evolved, the presence and significance of sagittarii grew, reflecting the increasing importance of versatile and specialized forces within the Roman military structure.
