Description
Velites were a class of light infantry in the Roman army during the middle and late Republic period. Typically, they were young, less experienced soldiers or poorer citizens who could not afford the heavy armor of the legionaries.
Velites were equipped with lighter gear to maximize their mobility and effectiveness in skirmishing roles. Their primary weapon was the javelin, designed for throwing, along with a short sword for close combat. They also carried a small, round shield called a parma and wore a light helmet, often adorned with a wolf’s pelt for identification.
The main role of the velites was to skirmish ahead of the main army, harassing and disrupting enemy formations with their javelins before retreating behind the lines of heavier infantry. This made them crucial for softening up the enemy and providing cover for the more heavily armed soldiers. Velites were also used in a variety of other tactical situations, such as screening the flanks, pursuing retreating foes, and scouting ahead of the main force. Their versatility and agility made them an essential component of the Roman military system until reforms in the late Republic era led to their gradual phasing out and replacement by more standardized and heavily armed troops.
