Their authority derived from the higher-ranking officials who appointed them, making them trusted representatives in both civil and military matters.
A “praefectus” (plural: praefecti) was a type of official who held various administrative and military responsibilities. The term itself means “one who is put in charge” and could refer to a wide range of positions. For instance, praefecti might oversee specific regions, manage particular tasks within the army, or hold command over specialized units or functions. These roles were usually assigned by higher authorities and varied significantly in their specific duties and levels of power, depending on the context in which they served.
Both legati and praefecti played crucial roles in the governance and military operations of the Roman Republic, acting as extensions of the authority of higher-ranking officials and ensuring the effective administration and execution of their directives.
